Writing equations from a word problem.

We started looking at creating an equation from a word problem / pattern.  We will go over this again in our double block, but here is an example:

STEPS:
  • create a table of values
  • is the pattern a linear one?  (does x and y go up/down by the same amount each time?)
  • rise = change in y's
  • run = change in x's
  • slope = rise/run
  • go 'backwards" one spot on your graph to see where the y-intercept would be (green)
  • If you need to, draw a graph to see the slope and y-intercept.
