These are the rules we've covered so far...

Should have finished all homework in class as I didn't give you a lot.  Play a game of crib, a game of cards, a brainbasher, a logic puzzle, or some other math/solving style game this weekend :)

Tuesday, September 12

Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing Rational Numbers

• When adding and subtracting, you need to get a common denominator, then + or - numerators
• Always look to see if you need to reduce your fraction

• When multiplying, multiply numerators and denominators
• Always look to see if you need to reduce your fraction
• If you can reduce the fractions BEFORE multiplying, it helps make your answer easier to reduce

• When dividing, take the reciprocal of the second fraction and then multiply (flip and multiply)
• Always look to see if you need to reduce your fraction

HOMEWORK:  Both sides of the white sheet ( adding, subtracting and dividing) and either side of the green sheet (multiplying)

Monday, Sept 11

Today we reviewed working with Rational Numbers (aka fractions)

• a rational number can be written in form a/b, where a and b are integers and b cannot be 0

Multiplying or Dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number does NOT change the number because you are really multiplying by 1.

When putting rational numbers in order either

• find a common denominator first and compare numerators
• put into decimal form first

September 8th

Today we reviewed the divisibility rules:

Homework:  A few of you still need to bring in your item for our Math Quilt Bulletin Board.

Do some math or a puzzle:  crib, farkle, cards, brainbasher logic game, logic puzzle etc...(will be our attendance question on Monday) :)

September 6th

Today we worked on solving puzzles and getting our brains working.  We learned how to do two different Japanese logic puzzles:

• Futoshiki
• Kakaruso

We used the iPad's to go to the logic puzzles section of brainbashers to try more puzzles.  If you'd like to try more, here is the link  https://www.brainbashers.com/logicpuzzles.asp

Homework:  You need to bring in a puzzles, math quote, math joke etc to put on your square in our Math Quilt. :)
