You guys ROCKED the test !

Nice work on your test everyone!  It looks like I don't have to worry about your ability to figure out sales tax or simple interest.  Here are your updated marks:

December 11th

We reviewed graphing linear equations using formula I = prt.

We played the bean budget game where I discovered that grade 9 students like to put raw beans in their mouths, even when they see others spitting them out.  Yuck.

We did look at making sure you put some of your income towards NEEDS and using the remaining money to go towards WANTS.  We were then forced to rethink some of our decisions once we had a cut in our income.  We looked at what happens if we didn't buy insurance, and we had the fun of adding new beans thanks to Mom and Dad.

No homework today, but I collected the homework from yesterday.  If you missed handing it in, do so ASAP.

Review next class and the test on Wednesday.

December 9th

We talked more about interest today.  We also talked about income tax, a bit about budgets, and a few more tips about money.  Some day you are going to have to spend money on boring things like furnaces and roof repairs too ;)

We tied interest questions in with the linear graphing unit by graphing interest over time.  I gave you four questions.

1.  Mikayla wants to take a $5000 loan.  RBC will charge her 5.5% per year simple interest.  List your facts, make a table of values and graph to TOTAL COST for each ear up to ten years.

2.  Oliver wants to buy a dirt bike.  He can get a loan from CIBC  for 6.5%.  If he needs $9000.  Graph his INTEREST over ten years.

3.  Jonah wants to build a castle with megblocks.  He can get a loan from the Credit Union for up to five years.  He needs $1200.  Graph the TOTAL COST each year for up to five years if the interest rate is 7%.

4.  Amy wants to buy a horse.  It is $14,300 for the horse she wants.  Amy can get a loan from the stable owner for 3%.  Graph the INTEREST she owes for 5 years.

For each question, list the facts, make a table of values and graph.  Label your graph and try to use as much of it as possible.

December 8th - double block day

In the first half of class, we discussed interest.  I talked about getting loans for cars and houses and gave you tips for your future when it's your turn to start getting loans.  Take the time to talk with your parents about loans as well.  I explained that banks actually use Compound Interest, but in grade 9, we are only starting with Simple Interest.

Interest Rate:  the percentage you are charged per year for borrowing money.
Principal: The amount borrowed
Interest:  The "extra" you have to pay back
Time: How long you are borrowing the money for

Formula:  I = prt

I = interest
p = principal
r = rate
t = time

Every time you do a question, I want you to write down the list of known information from the question.

HOMEWORK:  The Simple Interest Worksheet (10 questions)
