Tuesday, September 12

Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing Rational Numbers

• When adding and subtracting, you need to get a common denominator, then + or - numerators
• Always look to see if you need to reduce your fraction

• When multiplying, multiply numerators and denominators
• Always look to see if you need to reduce your fraction
• If you can reduce the fractions BEFORE multiplying, it helps make your answer easier to reduce

• When dividing, take the reciprocal of the second fraction and then multiply (flip and multiply)
• Always look to see if you need to reduce your fraction

HOMEWORK:  Both sides of the white sheet ( adding, subtracting and dividing) and either side of the green sheet (multiplying)

Monday, Sept 11

Today we reviewed working with Rational Numbers (aka fractions)

• a rational number can be written in form a/b, where a and b are integers and b cannot be 0

Multiplying or Dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number does NOT change the number because you are really multiplying by 1.

When putting rational numbers in order either

• find a common denominator first and compare numerators
• put into decimal form first

Today we reviewed the divisibility rules:

Homework:  A few of you still need to bring in your item for our Math Quilt Bulletin Board.

Do some math or a puzzle:  crib, farkle, cards, brainbasher logic game, logic puzzle etc...(will be our attendance question on Monday) :)

September 6th

Today we worked on solving puzzles and getting our brains working.  We learned how to do two different Japanese logic puzzles:

• Futoshiki
• Kakaruso

We used the iPad's to go to the logic puzzles section of brainbashers to try more puzzles.  If you'd like to try more, here is the link  https://www.brainbashers.com/logicpuzzles.asp

Homework:  You need to bring in a puzzles, math quote, math joke etc to put on your square in our Math Quilt. :)

Reviewed all types of factoring and played polynomial bingo (with simple trinomials and difference of squares).

Friday - Prepare for Bingo with all trinomials (with numbers out front too), GCF's, Difference of Squares and Perfect Trinomial Squares.

Today we looked at factoring using decomp.  This method takes longer, but will always work.

Today we did a worksheet going over Point Slope Form for extra practice.  I sat with each of you individually to go over the mistakes you made on your quiz so you could see where you may be making mistakes.

HOMEWORK:  Finish the worksheet.  I will give another quiz tomorrow to review Point Slope Form.

Feb 15th

I promise to put more effort into keeping my blog updated.  I always leave the room right after class so Ms VonBremen's class can start and then I forget or get caught up in vice principal stuff.

Today we looked at an equation if we are given a point and the slope.

We also looked at changing an equation in Point Slope Form into Slope Intercept Form

1. We played "Ordered Pair Battleship" to refresh ourselves with labeling points (x,y)  

• Tristan was the 2017 Math 10 Champion - sinking all 5 of Heather's ships

1. Yesterday we spent some time seeing if we could "discover" a new method for finding slope.  Today we reviewed it and did a homework sheet finding slope by graph and using ordered pairs.
2. When finding slope using two points, it doesn't matter which point you start from, as long as you use the same point to start for both numerator and denominator.

Today we reviewed different graphs and how to show Domain and Range.

We also reviewed evaluating and solving for x & y

Today we took notes on definitions for:

• You can have more time if you need

We reviewed Unit 1 - Exponent rules and combining like terms.

• You all have a copy of our first unit test to do (try not to look at your notes or at your past test to start).  
• Make your corrections using your notebooks, past test, friends, and/or me.
• Make your own questions in the areas you are having the most difficulty.  Mark your corrections and keep doing this until you can do all questions without looking at your notes.

TEST TIPS

Writing Multiple Choice Tests:

• NEVER leave a question blank - as a last resort, at least make an educated guess.
• NEVER waste time on a question worth one mark.  Mark a hard question to come back to later.
• Draw a triangle around a tough question and circle a question you think you have, but want to check later.
• Cross off the obviously wrong answers - it will at least give you a better chance of making a good educated guess.

Ways to start studying:

• NEVER just look at your past notes - this is the worst way to study.  You don't have notes in your test, so you want to practice with your books closed.

1. Pick 10 questions from past tests, quizzes, textbooks, internet etc. (make sure you have the answers somewhere)
2. Put your book away and try the questions like it is a test.
3. Open your book and mark the work.
4. With your book open, make your corrections.
5. Pick another 10 questions and start again - this time, pick questions you struggled with the first time.
6. Keep doing this until you can comfortably do the questions on your own.

* To make this more fun, do this with a friend.  Make questions for each other :)  I'm sure a parent will help you pick out questions as well :)

I have photocopied all of our tests from the semester for you to go over.  Please try to do these on your own first before you start to look at your answers - see above.

We reviewed all homework from the last week and went over some of the common mistakes that were being made.  You had to work in a group of 2-4 students to make and answer questions.  These can be definitions, graphs, or any other creative way you would like to show you understand.

FINAL TRANSFORMATION LESSON

A dilation is a type of transformation that changes the size of the image. The scale factor, sometimes called the scalar factor, measures how much larger or smaller the image is.
